Another weekend of wrestling has come and gone, drawing us closer to the final destination of the season, the Class B/C wrestling tournament on March 5th and 6th.  The Fairfield Eagle wrestlers had the opportunity to practice flexibility this week when their mixer scheduled on Thursday the 11th in Fort Benton was canceled due to inclement weather, only to be spontaneously replaced by a dual in Whitehall Friday night against the host school and Thompson Falls. They then traveled to Shelby Saturday to compete in their scheduled mixer. It was a tough week of wrestling, filled with highs and lows…here are some of the highlights.

Friday night, the Eagle wrestlers traveled to Whitehall to take on two highly competitive teams, Whitehall and Thompson Falls. Unfortunately, Fairfield was missing four of their varsity wrestlers, due to injury or health issues, which put the team at an immediate disadvantage for scoring in the dual format. Despite the near impossibility of winning either dual because of loss of points by forfeits, the Eagles wrestled hard, as always giving 100% on the mat. Although Fairfield was defeated by points against both Whitehall and Thompson Falls, the team showed their skills and used this dual as one more chance to be prepared for Divisionals and State. These are the wrestler’s individual stats listed wins to losses: Miguel Ramos (126) 2-0, McCoy Banner (138) 1-1, Miguel Perez (152) 0-2, Cael Giles (170) 0-1, Kolter Bouma (185) 1-0, Cole Troy (205) 0-1, Isaac Lauver (HWT) 0-1, LJ Saurman (HWT) 0-1.

One highly anticipated match during this dual was between Fairfield’s Miguel Ramos (126) and Whitehall’s Dawson Powers (132). Both wrestlers were state placers last season in their respective weight classes, Ramos placing 2nd at 113 lbs., and Powers placing 3rd at 120 lbs. Wrestling fans were treated to a great match as expected; the decision came down to the wire. With the score 7-8 in favor of Powers, Ramos scored a 2 point take down with about 10 seconds left in the 3rd period. Coach May yelled at him to “hold the lead” and with seconds left he looked up, nodded his head, and gave his coach the okay sign. Ramos came out with a narrow victory of 9-8. Congratulations to both wrestlers on a job well done.

Saturday, found the Eagles in Shelby wrestling in a mixer tournament along with the teams from Choteau, White Sulphur Springs, Conrad, Browning, Valier, Bigfork, and Shelby.  Again the Eagles wrestled well, winning the majority of their matches including an incredibly exciting pin by sophomore Isaac Lauver! Here are Saturday’s stats listed wins to losses: Miguel Ramos (126) 1-1, McCoy Banner (138) 0-2, Miguel Perez (152) 2-0, Joshua Spittler (152) 0-2, Giavante Evens () 0-2, Cael Giles (170) 1-1, Kolter Bouma (185) 1-1, Cole Troy (205) 0-1, Isaac Lauver (HWT) 2-0, LJ Saurman (HWT) 2-0.

This weekend marks the last weekend of the regular season, with Fairfield traveling to Choteau on Friday night and Lewistown on Saturday! Good Luck to our wrestlers! Prepare hard and learn lots!
