Mary Ruth Holtz

MAPLE VALLEY, WA - Mary Ruth Holtz (Sherbondy), 79, of Maple Valley, WA passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019. A family memorial will be held at a later date.

Mary Ruth was born on November 25, 1939 in Mount Pleasant, PA to Irwin S. and Frances B. Sherbondy. She graduated from South Huntington, PA High School in 1957. At 19, with a newly minted teaching certificate from Valley City, ND Teachers College and a heart for adventure, she took her first job as a 5th grade teacher at Collins School in Black Eagle, MT. It was during this time that she met a farmer from Floweree. She married Larry Holtz in 1963 and they made their home on the farm north of Great Falls before moving to the Fairfield Bench. There they raised their children and Mary was active in Eastern Star, WIFE, Fairfield UCC, and enjoyed creative writing and teaching. They moved to Sunnyside, WA in 1987 and then to western Washington in 1999.

Mary was diagnosed with MS in her thirties, and while it confined her body over the last few decades, she never lost her quick wit, her love of learning or the twinkle in her eye. The family is forever appreciative and grateful for the loving care she received at Walnut Grove Nursing, Grandview, WA and Evergreen Rehab Center, Enumclaw, WA over the years.

Mary is survived by her husband, Larry Holtz; her son Vaughn (Darcy) of Maple Valley; her daughters Liesl of Hobson, MT and Gretchen of Shoreline, WA; her sister Sally Yates of Fayette City, PA; her brother-in-law Don (Joan) Holtz of El Monte, CA; her grandchildren Tawnya, Owen, Kara, and Katrina; three nieces and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Laurel.
