First Two for Sailfish

Summer is here and for the Fairfield swim team, the first two meets are in the books. On June 2nd and 3rd, 7 Sailfish hit the road for the highline to race in Harlem. With 94 degree temperatures, the swimmers gladly dove in and some shockingly fast times were earned.

Tristan Gibson started the meet with a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM. Kolt and Remington Gough, the youngest Sailfish were next to dive in Saturday morning. Both boys jumped in and gave their all. Kolt swam to a 13th place finish and Remington kicked hard to earn 14th, placing both boys as alternates for the finals on Sunday.

Sunday proved to be hot and fast for the Sailfish and some exciting races highlighted the day. The morning found Levi Gibson swimming against the defending State Champion in the 50 Free. Levi  earned a personal record and pushed the State Champ to 2 tenths of a second from a state record. Riley Gough, competed as a 9 year old in the 9/10 age division, and clawed her way to a 2nd place finish in the backstroke. Ten minutes later her sister Tana, also competing as an under year, kicked to a 2nd place finish in the backstroke for the 11/12 year old girls. Dakota and Tristan Gibson threw in an excellent race as under year swimmers to each earn 1st in the Butterfly.

June 11th, the team gathered in Shelby for a 1 day meet. Several Sailfish had great races but a few performances stood out. Kolt and Remington Gough competed backstroke for the first time and placed 13th and 15th respectively. Darn good for two swimmers who couldn’t swim a full length of backstroke 2 days earlier! Most heart goes to Marissa Wipf who dove in for the 11/12 year old girls 200 Free Relay when her goggles slipped off and around her neck. Marissa didn’t miss a stroke and dug deep to keep her team in the ribbons race for fifth place. In the 50 backstroke, Toryn Martinez, at an almost dead tie with 3 other girls at the wall, kept her composure, performed an excellent flip turn and then poured on her kick to claim 1st place. Brooke McWilliams pulled off one of the closest wins of the meet in the 50 breaststroke when she used her final kicks to accelerate into the wall for the winning touch. Individual results follow.
