Simms, Sunburst Students Take Top Honors At Science Fair

  • 4 min to read

Great Falls College MSU hosted the Montana Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 7 and 8.

On March 7, more than 150 elementary school students in grades K-5 displayed projects ranging from cleaning pennies to if or how the immune system uses its memory to defeat unhealthy pathogens.

March 8 featured more than 200 middle school and high school students, grades 6-12.

Region II includes schools in Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Teton, Pondera, Cascade, and Judith Basin counties. More than 20 schools participated in the two days of the fair.

“We were very impressed by the projects presented at this year’s Science Fair,” said Heather Palermo, Director of Lifelong Learning at Great Falls College MSU and the Region II Science Fair Coordinator. “It’s amazing to see the ideas students come up with and how they put the scientific process to use.”

The top winners of the high school science fair were Mackenzie Wiegand and Madison Wiegand of Simms High School, who presented on the implementation of a silver nanoparticle water filtration using UV, and Jeena Alborano of North Toole County High School whose project focused on the effectiveness of iron oxide nanoparticles. These three students will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Phoenix in May.
