SSGT Atkins Added To Medal Of Honor Plaque During Ceremony At MT Veterans Memorial

Members of Marine Corps League, Det. 688, perform a “Boots and Rifle” ceremony in honor of Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins, United States Army, who was recently awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor by President Donald Trump.

On Saturday, members of the Marine Corps League along with members of the Montana Veterans Memorial Association gathered at the Memorial in Great Falls to pay tribune to Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins.

Before the early afternoon ceremony, Atkins name was added to a plaque listing the names of Medal of Honor recipients from Montana.

Atkins, with the U.S. Army, lost his life on June 1, 2007 “while serving in the position of Squad Leader with Company D, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.”

Atkins was born in Great Falls in 1975. In 1981 he and his family moved to Bozeman.

A formal ceremony is planned for the Memorial Day events to be held at the Montana Veterans Memorial.
